About Materials Science and Engineering Department of Sharif University of Technology

Materials Science is an interdisciplinary field applying the properties of matter to various areas of science and engineering. This scientific field investigates the relationship between the structure of materials at atomic or molecular scales and their macroscopic properties. It incorporates elements of applied physics and chemistry. Materials science also deals with fundamental properties and characteristics of materials.

The Department of Metallurgical Engineering was founded in 1966 in order to instruct metallurgical engineers and to perform research works in all aspects of manufacturing and processing of metallic materials. In 2000, the Department was renamed the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) due to the extensive researches carried out on metallic as well as non-metallic materials. In the same year, the Department was assigned as the center of excellence in "New Processes on Production and Forming of Advanced Materials" by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research. At present, 28 full-time faculty members including 15 Professors, 9 Associate Professors, 4 Assistant Professors and 4 Emeritus Professors are involved in teaching and research affairs and more that 30 administrators and supportive staffs are serving in 16 research laboratories.

The Department of MSE offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. For the undergraduate and graduate levels a four-year and two-year course leading to B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees are presented, respectively. For M.Sc. program different fields including Materials Selection and Processing, Nanomaterials, Welding Metallurgy, Extractive Metallurgy, Metal Forming and Deformation, Ceramic Materials, Corrosion and Protection of Materials, Metals Casting and Nanomaterials are available. Ph.D. research programs are also available in Powder Metallurgy and Polymer Engineering as well as those mentioned for M.Sc. program.

The laboratories in the Department of MSE have been equipped to conduct scientific research activities as well as to perform industrial-oriented projects and experiments.
